Martha was born a twin,the other child was listed as unnamed(likely deceased).

Martha attended Groesbeck schools, graduating from Groesbeck High School in the class of 1921. She attended Texas Women's University and Southern Methodist University where she pledged Chi-Omega sorority. She married William Hornbuckle England II in August 1926.

Martha began her working career with the Soil Conservation Office in Groesbeck in 1938. Two years later she became assistant Limestone County Auditor and served in that capacity from 1940 to 1949. During this period, she went back to school at the University of Houston to complete her BS degree in Education in August 1946. In 1955 she earned her MS degree in Special Education from Baylor University.

She taught in Groesbeck High School from 1949 to 1957. She then taught school in Irving, Texas from 1957-1959 and in the Houston Independent School district from 1960-1961. She continued her teaching career with the Mexia State School (for the mentally challenged) from 1961 until her retirement in 1974. Following her retirement, she taught home-bound students in south Limestone County for two more years.

Martha passed away in Houston, Texas on January 26, 2002 about a month following hip surgery to repair a broken bone due to a fall just after Christmas. She was 97 years old and had been living in Houston in the Freemont Retirement Center in Houston since February 1995.
