Harold Hitt, age 91, longtime Campbell County resident passed away Friday, August 13, 2010 of natural causes, surrounded by his family.

Harold Hitt was born on February 28, 1919 in Doniphan, Nebraska the fourth of eight children of Charles and Bertha (Harrod) Hitt.
The family moved to Gillette, Wyoming in 1923, and purchased a homestead south of Gillette off what is now Sinclair Street. Harold helped with the family dairy and delivered milk until he was drafted and joined the Army in 1945.
After being wounded while serving in Okinawa, he was transported to Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver where he met his future bride, Mary Ruth Dotson. They were married in 1947, and moved three miles south to the current ranch location off of Southern Drive.
After marriage, he did custom carpentry work and farming. Then in 1956, he began working for Underwood Lumber Company, retiring when the business closed in 1976.
Harold always kept up with ranching and farming operations on his own ranch and took care of his mother's ranch as well. He frequently worked odd jobs, including finish trim work in houses and hauling equipment for Shrimplin's Water Service. Harold loved his family and was proud to have most of them living on the ranch.
He never knew a stranger and welcomed many guests in his home. He loved to travel, and spent much of his free time traveling the area checking out new construction projects.

Harold is survived by his daughter, Janet (Roy) Cranston of Prairie City, South Dakota; sons: Joe (Allene) Hitt and Bruce (Tammi) Hitt all of Gillette, Wyoming; brother, Charles (Wilda) Hitt of Veneta, Oregon; sister, Maxine Grams of Gillette, Wyoming; three granddaughters: Tabatha (Jeff) Poplin, Jami (Brandon) Cone and Jenni Hitt; five great-granddaughters: Sydni, Hayli and Nikki Poplin, Madison and Emma Lea Ruth Cone all of Gillette, Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and siblings: Ada Potter, Ruth Dillon, James Raymond Hitt, Doris Towne, and Norma Tanner Lampman.
