Kenneth Lemoyne Davis, 509 West Highland Ave in Carthage, MO. passed away at Burge Protestant Hospital in Springfield, Missouri after having been admitted 24 days earlier, losing a battle with cancer. He had been an accountant for an engineering firm. His wife Ellen McCarroll Davis survived him, later passing away in 2000.
He was a veteran of World War II
His parents were Phillip Barnhart Davis and Josephine Draves Davis.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home and burial in Park Cemetery

KENNETH L. DAVIS, 45, WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT SUCCUMBS

Kenneth Lemoyne Davis, 45, well-known Carthage resident died at 1:40 this morning in Burge Protestant Hospital in Springfield. He had been in failing health since last October. His condition became critical December 18, when he was moved from his home at 509 West Highland to the Springfield Hospital.
Although he made his home in Carthage, Mr. Davis was an accountant for Frank Horton and Company in Lamar. He had been with that firm since 1946.

Born February 11, 1915 in Golden City, Mr. Davis' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Phil B. Davis, moved to Colorado when the son was a small boy. Later they went to South Dakota and came to Carthage in 1939 from Minnesota.
Kenneth Davis was graduated from South Dakota State College at Brookings when the family lived in that state.
He was married May 24, 1942 to Miss Ellen McCarroll of Carthage.
Mr. Davis was a communicant of Grace Episcopal church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Carthage Masonic Lodge No. 197 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite bodies of Joplin and of Abou Ben Adhem Shrine, Springfield.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Davis served in the Pacific theater with the 302nd Fighter Control Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force.
Surviving are his wife; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip B. Davis of 607 East Fifteenth street; a brother, Phillip J. Davis, San Jose, CA., Ben Davis, Purcell and John Davis, Lamar are uncles and Mrs. George Rohm and H. B. Davis of Carthage are cousins of Mr. Davis. Miss Ruth McCarroll and Clarence McCarroll of Carthage are sister and brother of Mrs. Davis.
Funeral services will be at Ulmer Funeral Home. The Rev. Vincent C. Root, rector of Grace Episcopal church, will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.

The 1920 Census reported that Ellen McCarroll was age 14 and living in the home of her parents at 401 West Highland in Carthage, Missouri. Her father Charles, age 47 was employed as a sewing machine salesman, bp. Arkansas.
Her mother Annie, age 46 was employed as a corset sales lady, bp. Illinois.
Siblings listing in the home were; Ruth age 21, employed as a bookkeeper and stenographer for a building and loan association; Lawrence J. age 19, employed as assistant chemist at the local powder mill; Clarence C. also age 19, employed as a shell maker at same powder mill; Clay age 18, employed at a greenhouse [likely Perry Finn's because it was close by his home] as a fireman; and Edward, age 10, was school age.

In the 10 years between the 1920 Census and the 1930 Census things changed considerably in the McCarroll household. The address is now listed at 509 West Highland. [The home is the same, so most likely with the progress of more development in the neighborhood the address changed.] Annie is now 54 [56] and divorced from Charles and no longer working. Children still residing with her in the home are Clarence age 30 working at a filling station; Ruth now 31, is working as a stenographer at a loan company and Ellen is now 23 working as a stenographer at an insurance firm.

Ellen, even after later getting married remained in the home her parents built at 509 West Highland Ave the rest her her long lived life. She was employed many years as a bookkeeper at the Carthage Water and Electric Company.

Ellen Jean McCarroll Davis, 94, Carthage, died at 9:35 a.m. Saturday April 8. 2000 at St. Luke's Nursing Center.
Mrs. Davis was born February 10, 1906 at Jonesboro, Arkansas to Charles C. and Annie Rebecca Jennings McCarroll. She retired as an accountant from Sun Oil Company.
She was a 1925 graduate of Carthage High School and Draughon's Business College. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage and a 60 year member of Order of Eastern Star.
She married Kenneth L. Davis on May 24, 1942 at Carson City, Nebraska. He preceded her in death in January 1961. There are no immediate survivors. The body was cremated.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday April 19, at Park Cemetery. The Rev. John Anderson will officiate.
