The Carnegie Herald, Wed., Jan. 12, 1949Pruet's Brother Is Shot to Death By Unknown GunmanEarl Pruet, prominent Oklahoma City attorney and half-brother of L.E. Pruet of southeast of Carnegie, was killed by an unknown gunman Tuesday in his office in Oklahoma City. The killer was a stranger in the attorney's office. In the confusion he left by the elevator in the First National building and escaped.Attendants in the office could give no reason for the shooting. Mrs. Alice Collier, a receptionist, said the gunman came into the office and asked for Pruet. Pruet stepped out of his office at the moment and inquired of the man if he could help him. The man said something about "wanting to get a divorce." Pruet gave him some reply and started walking down the hall with the man following him. The man shot Pruet in the back at close range.Earl Pruet was 49 years old. He was born two miles east and a mile south of Cordell, son of Rev. and Mrs. Walter Pruet. Earl taught school and served as county attorney in Jefferson county. For a number of years he was in the U.S. district attorney's office.He was a member of the law firm of Richardson, Shartel, Cochran and Pruet, one of the largest legal firms in the city.
