From the Geneva Courier of 3 November 1875

FATAL ACCIDENT -- Last Sunday afternoon a sad and fatal accident, which cast a gloom over many a family, occurred near Covel settlement, in the town of S. Bristol. Mr. and Mrs. Ira P. Cribbs who resided on the lake road, in this town, had been to Naples, visiting relatives, during the day, and were returning home about dusk. In descending a hill, some part of the harness gave away, and letting the thills drop, the horse suddenly started on a run. Mr. Cribbs held on to the reins and was dragged out of the wagon and drawn quite a distance before he succeeded in stopping the animal. He escaped, however, with only a few slight bruises. The sudden stopping of the wagon threw Mrs. Cribbs out over the dashboard, to the ground. In falling, she struck upon her head with force sufficient to break her neck, causing instant death. Mrs. Cribbs was in her twenty-third year, an only daughter of Mr. Jonas W. Wolverton, a kind and devoted wife, and beloved by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

From The Naples Record 30 October 1875
As Mr. Ira Cribb and wife were returning home Sunday afternoon, his horse became frightened at a load of lumber standing in front of Isaac Gardener's house, and started to run; Mr. Cribb got him under control however, until coming down a hill the horse stumbled and fell, breaking a thill; becoming uncontrollable Mr. C. turned him into the fence, and sprang from the buggy to seize the horse by the bits. In the effort Mr. C. was thrown down, and the horse wheeled round overturning the buggy and throwing Mrs. Cribb violently to the ground, breaking her neck and one arm. Mrs. Cribb was the only daughter of Jonas Wolverton of Canandaigua.
The terrible accident, that resulted in the death of this esteemed lady, occurred Sunday afternoon, October 24th, just south of the Covel Settlement. The failing of the horse - a few rods south of the bend above the corners - or his getting up, broke the right hand thill so that the more Mr. Cribb tried to check the horse the more the broken thill and cross bar worried him. Mr. Cribb jumped, striking upon his feet, caught the line, and had a good hold, but when the horse went out of the road he was thrown down and dragged about four rods where he was jerked loose by striking in a furrow. While he was being dragged thus, Mrs. Cribb said, "why Ira!" and they were her last words! At the bend in the road the buggy was tipped over throwing her violently to the ground in such a manner as to break her neck and otherwise bruised her. Mr. Cribb was not seriously injured. Friends were quickly at the spot, and the lifeless remains were carried to Mr. Gardener's. Dr. Bently was called, and everything done, that could be done for her, but examination showed that her neck was broken by the fall and sure death immediately followed. The remains were carried home during the night by kind father, husband and friends, there beautifully and tastefully arrayed for the grave, and kept until Wednesday, October 27th, when after appropriate services at the residence of her father, she was lovingly placed in the cemetery at Canandaigua.
Emily, the deceased, was the only child of Jonas W. Wolverton near Canandaigua, was aged 23 years, was well known and much loved by a very large circle of friends. She was the delight of loving parents and her young husband Ira P. Cribb, and had started out in the journey of life with brighter and more hopeful prospects than young wives usually have. She was a sincere Christian, daughter and wife. She attended the Academy here and to know her was to love her, but when converted to God her Christian virtues shone brighter and her worth more fully shone forth. The feelings of the father, mother and husband at this untimely visitation, and the manner of it, cannot be estimated nor can the void in the circle in which he moved be filled; but the sympathy of the entire county goes out to them in their affliction. The consolation can be treasured that her life was that of a praying, earnest Christian and she will reap the full reward.
