Joseph Herbert Chilcott Sr. was married twice. His first wife was Mary Isabell Norcross(1851-1879). They had three children:
1. Robert Samuel CHILCOTT(1872–1949)
2. Angie V. CHILCOTT(1874–1881)
3. Charles CHILCOTT(1877–)

His second wife was Sarah Isabelle Peterson(1854-1933). Their children are linked below.

He lived in Shenandoah County until 1880. He then relocated to Front Royal, Virginia and then before 1900 he relocated to Alexandria City, Virginia, spending the rest of his life there at various locations in what is now known as "Old Town Alexandria".

A carpenter by trade, he established J.H. CHILCOTT & SONS in Alexandria City. His sons, Joseph Herbert, Jr. and Harry R. worked with him in this business until his death. One contract his company secured was the rebuilding of St. John's Episcopal Chapel in 1903. It was located in the West End at the old toll gate. The old edifice was razed and Joseph was selected to build a more modern and commodious edifice.
