Ardmore, OK — Funeral services for Donald "Dale" Chaney, Sr., 72, will be Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the Harvey-Douglas Centennial Chapel with Reverend Tom Riley officiating. Burial will follow at Lone Grove Cemetery.
The son of Theodore "Buster" and Verna J. Cummings Chaney, he was born Sept. 2, 1937, at Lone Grove and passed away Feb. 12, 2010, in a local hospital from injuries he suffered in a traffic accident.
He and the former Gloria "Jane" Spurlock were married October 20, 1956, at Huntington Park, California and she preceded him in death October 26, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Vida Reis and Betty Speer.
Dale was a good, peaceful, born again Christian man who loved God, family, country and gospel music. He was an accomplished guitarist and singer. During the 50's and 60's, he sang on TV in the Los Angles area, Big 2 Country and Western Halls, Town Hall Party and Foreman Phillips Country Ballroom, and numerous other dance halls.
Dale, with his brother, Leo's band, the Sagebrush Playboys, had wrote many songs, and just recently recorded a gospel C. D. with just him and his guitar.
Dale had worked for Ralph's Markets in the Los Angeles area starting as a box boy in high school. He retired after 20 years with Ralph's as manager and returned to Lone Grove 1976. He and Jane owned and operated Dale's Market for 24 years and had been working at Ardmore Yamaha Honda as parts manager. He was a guitarist with the Lone Grove Methodist Church, where he was a long time member.
Dale was very proud to own a market in Lone Grove, as his great-grandfather had opened a store in 1885, when the town was settled. It was Cummings Store and is partly pictured on the Centennial belt buckle. In 1985 he and two other ladies started the Lone Grove Annual Centennial Days. Their names are inscribed on a granite marker in Sullivan Park. Dale was also instrumental in starting the Lone Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Lone Grove Kiwanis Club. Dale and his band played the centennial celebration and the July 4th fireworks for years.
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Beaver and her husband Dwayne of Lone Grove, Karen Danielsen of Livermore, Calif.; sons, Don Chaney Jr., and Ron both of Lone Grove; brothers, Leo Chaney and wife Betty of Ardmore, Harold Dean and wife Flora of Ardmore; grandson, Donald D. Chaney III, of Biloxi, Miss.; granddaughters, Jacklyn Chaney and Tiffany Beaver of Lone Grove, Christen Hensley and Rachel Danielsen of Livermore, Calif.; his companion, Ila Davoult of Lone Grove, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
