GLADYS MARGUERITE WOLVERTON
Jan. 27, 1915 - Feb. 15, 2010
Gladys Marguerite Wolverton, 95, of Salem, formerly of Jefferson, died Monday at Regency Woodland Residential Center in Salem.
Gladys was born in Albany to John B. and Anna C. (Goetz) Calahan. Her parents ran a livery stable and rooming house. Gladys used to always say that she was born in a barn.
At the age of 2, with the advent of cars, the family moved to a farm at Crabtree for a couple of years of farming, and then in November 1919 they moved to Jefferson, where they bought the B.S. Richardson farm, presently known as Calahan Corner. She attended Jefferson grade and high school, graduating with the class of 1932.
Gladys married Leland W. Wells on June 2, 1935. To this union were born three children, Larry Wayne, Sharon Lee and John Wesley. They continued to live on and farm the home place. In 1944 the family bought and moved to the Vasek farm and continued farming both places. They later divorced.
Gladys was a member of the Jefferson Christian Church, was active in the Lioness Club, and was a member of the Wedding Ring Club.
In 1962, Gladys married CECIL P. WOLVERTON and in 1964 they moved to Wickenberg, Ariz., where they owned and operated a car dealership. In 1968 they retired and moved into an adult mobile home park in Phoenix, where they were active in many social activities and were members of the Orangewood Church of the Nazarene. Cecil preceded Gladys in death on Sept. 14, 1980.
Gladys is survived by her son, Larry, who continues to live on the Vasek place farm, and his wife, Karen; daughter Sharon and husband Jack McLennan; son John, who lived on the original John B. Calahan farm, and his wife, Janice; grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends in the Jefferson area.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Cecil; and only sister Dorothy Christina Weddle. She and Dorothy had traveled together extensively throughout the world.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Jefferson Cemetery followed by a reception at the Jefferson Community Center.
Memorial contributions to the Greater Jefferson Community Center may be sent in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321 (www.fisherfuneralhome.com).
