He answered to Alphis, A.B., Bill, Apple Blossom, Daddy or Pappaw. The latter being his favorite. His greatest joy was his lap full of grandchildren.
He served his country proudly during WWII. While on the front lines of Hitler's Germany, he was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Clinton Masonic Lodge, as a 32nd degree Mason.
During his lifetime, A.B. delivered ice, was a policeman, owned a car repair garage and wrecking service, a Texaco service station in Mt. Enterprise and then drove for Scurlock Oil Company as long as his health allowed.
His heart held nothing but compassion for his fellow man, as evidenced by the two "cigar" boxes full of IOUs for anything from working on someone's car, a tank of gas so they could get to work or a $5 cash loan to feed their children. He lived as God commanded; " it is better to give than to receive" and The Golden Rule; "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you."
He professed his faith in Jesus at an early age and attended Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church most of his life. In his later years he joined Kilgore Missionary Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until his death.
A much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend that is sorely missed. Looking forward to that great reunion!!!!

Birth: Jul. 10, 1918
Death: Aug. 16, 2012
Katie Lee Busby was born the second of six children to Thomas Lee and Minnie Brown Busby on July 10, 1918 in Mount Enterprise, TX. Katie fought a valiant fight before surrendering into the arms of her heavenly Father at Homeplace Hospice in Tyler on August 16, 2012 after a long full life.
She married Alphis Belton (A.B.) Hammett on October 12, 1940 before he left to serve his country in World War II. Growing up during the Great Depression and marrying during the war made her a very frugal wife and mother. She sewed clothes for her children from feed sacks and cooked and served feast from what she raised on the land. A house full of family and friends were her greatest joy. She lived her entire life in Rusk County except for a brief time in Houston. This is where they met the James Stricklin family that became their life long friends.
Katie was a stay at home Mother until a few years after her youngest started to school. Her love of cooking made her employment choice an easy one. She worked for more than 20 years for Henderson ISD, first as a cafeteria employee at Montgomery, then as the cafeteria manager at Chamberlain. In 1981 Katie retired to take care of her husband. After he died in 1984 she spent hours volunteering with the local VFW and making lap quilts for our veterans at the VA Hospital in Shreveport. She also helped her daughter and the Rotary Club during numerous fundraising events. Katie was a member of the Kilgore Missionary Baptist Church where she attended faithfully until the drive and her health didn't allow it any longer. However, she still supported their youth whenever she could. Cooking, sewing and quilting were her life's passion. As she aged and her body slowed down she also realized she enjoyed reading. Something she never took the time to do in her early years because she was always too busy. She was a strong woman that endured what life had to deal, faithful to God, loving her family and friends, always offering a helping hand. We thank God for blessing us with a healthy Mother and Granny for the greatest part of her 94 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her first born son Alphis Eugene (Gene) Hammett, her grandson Chris Hammett and all of her siblings.
