Birth: Dec. 13, 1952
Death: Apr. 22, 2004
Martha Brooke Pegram died Thursday after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Martha, known to many of her friends as Marti, was born Dec. 13, 1952, in St. Ignatius. She was the seventh child born to Basil and Tene Brooke of Whitehall, with her uncle Murray Brooke as the attending doctor. Martha attended school in Whitehall and continued her education at the Great Falls Vo-Tech where she received her certification as a dental assistant. While studying in Great Falls, Martha met her husband Cecil Pegram and they were married in Great Falls on March 2, 1973.
Martha and Cecil moved to Greensboro, N.C., in 1974 to attend college. She became the first white student to receive a nursing degree from A&T State University, which at the time was a predominantly black school. Martha had to work very hard and faced many obstacles while at A&T, but always was proud of her resourcefulness and determination in receiving her minority scholarship.
Martha enjoyed her time in North Carolina and made lifelong friends. However, she missed Montana, and after receiving her degree Martha moved to Billings to be closer to her family.
Martha worked for a short time at Deaconess Hospital and Yellowstone County Health Department but found her true calling as a school nurse. She worked as a school nurse for District 2 for 18 years, loving her work and becoming an important part of many young children's lives. While working as a school nurse, Martha returned to school and completed the nurse practitioner program. She accomplished this not small task while working full time, being a full time wife and raising three daughters.
Martha's three girls were the love of her life and nothing brought Martha more pleasure than planning birthday parties and bragging about her darling daughters. Martha was blessed on April 7 with her first grandchild. Easter Sunday was an exceptional day for Martha as she was surrounded by family and friends and held her new grandson.
Martha was a longtime member of St. Bernard's Catholic Parish, an accomplished quilter and regular "spin class" attendee at the Y.
It was Martha's desire to join her departed sisters and in particular her father Basil in heaven. We know that today she and her Dad are once again "riding the range" together.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil; daughters, Kara and Helen of the family home, and Jessica of Cody, Wyo.; grandson, David Jacob Pegram-Holt of Cody; mother, Tene of Whitehall; brother, Tom (Ann) Brooke of Helena; sisters, Betty (Phil) McMillen of Tacoma, Wash., Rachel (Carl) Coutu of Great Falls, Janet Brooke and Jim Whaley of Helena; brother-in-law, Bob Moes of Helena; mother and father-in-law, Martha and Victor "Cecil" Pegram of High Point, N.C.; sister-in-law, Jan Pegram of High Point, N.C.; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father Basil Brooke, sisters Mary Corrine "Connie" Moes, Helen Skillestad, Katherine Brooke, and an infant brother Thomas Brooke.
Vigil services will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday in
St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Billings, where the funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday.
Graveside services are 4 p.m. Monday at the Whitehall Cemetery followed by a dinner in St. Teresa Parish Center, Whitehall, for all family and friends.
