Birth: Apr. 1, 1892
Death: Apr. 1, 1975

I was a student of Percy Bridges at Sparta School, Sparta, Missouri during both the 5th and 7th grades in 1953-54 and 1955-56. Mr. Bridges was an older man at that time, and was very strict. Before coming to Sparta, he had taught at the one room school at Shady Grove in Christian County. Anyone breaking a rule would have to stay in during recess and write the Preamble to the Constitution or some such famous item several times on the blackboard. He was a tall, slender man, with sloping shoulders. He had excellent handwriting and was especially good in history and math. Every Friday afternoon was a special occasion and a break from the usual routine. We would have spelling or cyphering contests, or he would read from a book. He read The Red Badge of Courage to us, impressing us with its realism. He loved to teach about the Civil War. His favorite reading to the class was in the several Peck's Bad Boy books. He would laugh until tears ran down his face. The books were very tattered, and he was always on the lookout for any used copies he could locate. The last time I saw Mr. Bridges was when I went to visit him at his home in his retirement. I had found and bought a copy of Peck's Bad Boy and his Pa in very good condition. When I handed it to him, he held it and asked in unbelief, "Bill, where did you find this?" I told him I had ordered it through the mail. He asked how much I wanted for it. I told him it wasn't for sale. Now, many years later, I have often regretted that I didn't give him the book to treasure during his last days. --William Yates, 4 October 2009.
