Shirley Jean Reed 88, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2015. Shirley was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Callaway, Nebraska, to Raymond and Lucille Cress Baker.
The family lived north of Douglas where she and her four sisters Beverly, Teil, Delores and Sharon where raised. Shirley graduated high school in Douglas, and she attended Laramie College for two years where she received her teaching certificate. She then taught in a rural school at Box Elder for a year.
She married Henry Slichter in 1946 and had three children Lee, Kay, and Rea. She worked to support her family, she cleaned offices and homes, cooked for the Douglas Country Club and then became a landlord by purchasing several different properties around Douglas. She took care of everything from plumbing to building and everything in between singlehandedly.
Shirley loved the Lord and was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending her weekends shopping at all of the local garage sales and bringing home various treasures. In later years, she found a natural talent and love of painting. Wildlife and scenic pictures were painted on every medium from canvas to tiles to cow bones. She was able to sell most of these works of art. She looked forward to her weekly painting at the Douglas Senior Center with the girls. At the age of 66, she owned and operated Piggy Lou’s donut shop. She also enjoyed her motor home, which she traded up every few years for a bigger, better one. Her summers were spent taking her grandchildren and whomever else was willing to go to Thermopolis, Natural Bridge and the mountains. Last summer, she took the motor home to the Natural Bridge and spent several days there.
She also volunteered at Memorial Hospital of Converse County at the information desk. She was never one to sit still and her hands were always occupied with some sort of handicraft item.
Shirley is survived by her son Lee (Denise) Slichter, Delano, California, daughter Kay (Scott) Johnston, Wright, Wyoming, and daughter Rea (Jim) Strock, Douglas. She was Grandma Shirley to Brandon, Trenton, Kris, Keri, LeAnn, Kevin, Brad, Cindy, and 17 great-grandkids. She is also survived by her four sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
