Memorial service for retired Sgt. First Class Newton Lewis Walden, 101, of Lawton will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Lawton Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Monte Jones, officiating.

Sgt. First Class Walden passed peacefully following a brief illness.

Burial will be at Highland Cemetery with full military honors under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

He was born on December 30th, 1909, at Booneville, Mississippi to Lewis Sherman and Linnie Hart Walden. He served 4 years in the CCC as a youth in Tennessee. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and served in the Horse Drawn Artillery. He received numerous medals for service in Europe, Korea, and Japan including 3 Good Conduct Medals, Bronze Star Medal, European Theater of Operations. He retired after 20 years in the Army and 10 years in Civil Service and worked 4 years for Lawton Public School System. He was in food service most of his career. He served in the 45th Rainbow Division in Europe and in the 17th Field Artillery in Korea and on Occupation Duty in Japan.

He was an active long time member of Lawton Heights United Methodist Church. He was also a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge 540, Scottish Rite and India Shrine.

In 2009, he moved into the Lawton Fort Sill Veterans Center and lived there until his death. He was the oldest resident living at the Veterans Center.

He married Clemmie Fowler in 1943 while stationed at Fort Sill. She preceded him in death in 1985. He then married Lena J. Aycock Davis in 1986 in Arkansas. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and a step daughter, Mary Elaine Kent.

He is survived by his step daughter, Lenor J. Davis of Illinois; his step son and step daughter in law, Steve and Jane Davis of Colorado; step son in law, Dales Kent of Texas; 5 step grandsons and a step granddaughter; a special great nephew and his wife, Charles and Barbara Pardue of Mississippi; and numerous nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawton Heights United Methodist Church, 1514 NW Andrews, Lawton, OK 73507, in care of the Board of Trustees.

Service for Lena Justine Walden, 85, of Lawton, Oklahoma, will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Lawton Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles King, officiating.

Mrs. Walden died on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at a local hospital. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

She was born on May 7, 1922, in Lawton, to Fowler Pickens and Mable Justine Wolverton Aycock. She grew up in Lawton, graduating from Lawton High School in 1939. She graduated from Cameron Junior College in 1941 and then attended the Wesley School of Nursing in Oklahoma City. She married Lee Edmund Davis and he preceded her in death.

She lived in Washington, D.C from 1943 until 1945, in Chicago, Illinois from 1949 until 1952, in Sterling, Illinois from 1952-1957, West Peoria, Illinois from 1957 until 1961 and Fairfield, Iowa from 1961 until 1963. She returned to Lawton in 1963 and remained here until her death. She married Newton Lewis Walden on June 17, 1986, in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and they enjoyed years of traveling to many parts of the world. She was a member of the Lawton Heights United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Jane Davis of Broomfield, Colorado; a daughter, Lenor Davis of Des Plaines, Illinois; a brother, Byron Aycock of Lawton, Oklahoma; a son-in-law, Dales Kent of Round Rock, Texas; and six grandchildren, Andrew Kent, Afton Kent, Everett Davis, Brian Davis, Ethan Davis, and Tyler Davis.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elaine Kent.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lawton Heights United Methodist Church, 1514 NW Andrews, Lawton, OK 73507.

A visitation will be from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
