Eustace Prosper Voegtlin, Sr. was the tenth child of eleven and of immigrant parents. He was born and raised in the family home built by his father at Belleville Street, in a German section of Algiers. His nickname was for "baby" as he was the baby of the family but the thick accent of his mother gave it the sound of "Bobby". This name stayed with him throughout his life.
After he completed school Eustace went to work for the railroad. His job was only a couple of blocks from the home and within a comfortable walking distance. He had no skilled trade at the time but started apprenticing as a carpenter. He never acquired the mastery of his father but stayed with the same job until his retirement. Social security records list him as a retired railroad worker.
A later home in Algiers was on Pace Boulevard. This was the first owned home for he and wife Kate. At this home Eustace was able to have a kennel and keep hounds. There was also a small outbuilding that served as his carpentry workshop.
He enjoyed hunting and was a strong advocate for gun safety. In later years he used his carpentry skills to make toys he donated to children at the local hospitals.
He died at home in his sleep.

Catherine "Kate" was the oldest of 7 children, born in Algiers, Louisiana, descended from the Charles Woolverton line of England, Long Island and New Jersey. She was rather small in stature, just over 5 feet tall and slender her entire life.
She married at eighteen to Eustace "Bobby" Voegtlin and started a family almost immediately, the first two children being born only a year apart. The home she lived in was built by her father-in-law and equipped with indoor water and a flush toilet - amenities that country folks did not have back then.
She was not the classic southern cook as she avoided fried foods. Her preferred methods of cooking were par boiling or baking. A few recipes survived to her children and grandchildren.
Rice water also served as starch for the ironing during the depression when everything was recycled. Bones from meats were boiled down, clothes were mended and re-mended, and barterring was the standard of living.
After Eustace's death was when Kate discovered dating, dancing and traveling. Her favorite beaus were the ones "with wheels". She never remarried, but made many friends through seniors' clubs.
Diabetes affected her eyes in later life and before her death she lived with her oldest daughter.
