Reason Woolverton, one of the pioneer residents of Mulhall, and who was engaged in the barber business since coming to Mulhall, passed away at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, March 1, 1905, at his home in north Mulhall, from pleuro-pneumonia, after only a week's illness.
Reason Wolverton was born at Rockville, Park[sic] county, Indiana, August 17, 1848, and was, at the time of his death, 54 years, 6 months and 11 days of age. On April 5, 1874, he was united in marriage with Miss Fannie Vinedge, at Bedford, Iowa. To this union was born two children, Cyrus Lovell and Arrie A. In March 10, 1897, the latter was united in marriage with Mr. John D. Faires, Jr., and on January 1, 1900, Cyrus Lovell, the son, was united in marriage with Miss Vida E. Pettyjohn.
No citizen of Mulhall was better known than Reason Woolverton, or, as almost everybody called him, "Dad" Woolverton. He was an ardent Fraternal order advocate, and held membership in the Masonic, Eastern Star and Odd Fellows' lodges. He served as master of the local Masonic lodge; also as Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star. He but recently took the higher degrees in Masonry, being a member of the Guthrie Commandery of Knights Templars, which body sent an escort here to attend the burial of their brother Knight. Mr. Woolverton was also identified with church as well as fraternal orders, and was a member of the Christian church, serving on the building committee which engineered the building of the little house of worship of which we all feel proud. "Dad" Woolverton may have had his weaknesses, and we all have them, but that he was loved and honored by the people of Mulhall and vicinity is attested by the fact that great, strong men stood about his bier and wept while they looked upon the familiar face of the one they knew so well, but whom they would see no more in this life. In the lodge he was a tireless and faithful worker, and there are few if any of the younger members of the Masonic lodge here, where we loved to meet with "the boys" so well, but what have been "coached" in their first lessons in Masonry by "Dad" Woolverton. A lesson to a younger member wherein he was the tutor was seldom forgotten. And no member of the order, old or young, will ever forget the keen delight taken by Bro. Woolverton in putting on the higher degrees in the lodge room.
He took an active part in the business affairs of the town, and was usually to be found in mass meetings which were called to consider the welfare of the community.
His funeral was held from the Christian church, conducted by Elder O. O. Otis, pastor. The burial ceremonies were in charge of the fraternal orders of which he was a member. The funeral escort from the Guthrie Commandery Knights Templars was composed of the following: F. B. Rowe, Captain General; T. Twombly, R. E. Overton, W. C. Cooper, O. S. Rice, T. G. DeMoss, Calen Crowe, F. M. Spangler and D. E. Jones. The escort was in full uniform and carried out the beautiful drill of that order. At the grave, the always impressive service of the Masonic order was held. These services were directed by Worshipful Master Cleland, assisted by Secretary Walt Matthews of St. John's Lodge No. 12, A.F. & A.M. Brother Master Masons Isaac Wortman, Frank Hoopes, Charles Anthis, Leo Anthis, Eddie Baskins and Tom Woolsey acted as pallbearers. At the conclusion of the services, the remains of Reason Woolverton were laid tenderly away in Roselawn cemetery. The State Journal tenders to the sorrowing relatives sympathy in this trying hour of sorrow.
