The Ionia Sentinel 5-24-1900;

Lyman Simmons, for Fifty-one Years a Resident of Berlin Died in Ionia at the Age of 80.

The funeral for Lyman Simmons, who died at 825 West Main street, on Tuesday last at 2:30 p.m. was held from LeValley church yesterday.

Lyman Simmons was born in New York state in 1821, being within a few days of 80 years old at the time of his death. On April 3, 1843 he was united in marriage to Anna Kelly, in Niagara county, N.Y., who preceded him forty-two years.

From this union five children were born, all of whom are living, Amelia Griswold, of Ionia, who cared for him through his last suffering days, being the oldest; Nelson Simmons, who has charge of the Simmons homestead in Berlin; Scott Simmons, of Sydney; Rev. Frederick Simmons, of Carson City and Anna Moon of Berlin.

After three years of single life, Mr. Simmons, in 1851, then married Jane Millard, who died in Berlin in 1890, leaving her husband and one daughter to mourn her loss. Mrs. Oscar Jennings, is the only surviving child from this
union.

A few months later he was again married, to Clarissa Bates, who only lived seven years.

Rev. Orwick, formerly pastor of LeValley church, but now of Jackson, was the officiating clergyman. He spoke in very eloquent terms of Mr. Simmons; of his christian life, of his efficiency as an officer in the church, of which he had been a member for upwards of fifty years, holding positions to the credit of the church and community.
Nearly fifty near relatives followed the remains to the church, where others joined the escort to his last resting place in Balcom cemetery, where he was buried midst those of the family who preceded him.

Until two years ago, Mr. Simmons had been a resident of Berlin, but being in feeble health he came to Ionia, and enjoyed comparatively good health until seven months ago when a stroke of paralysis confined him to the house, but he was too aged and feeble to rally sufficient to get out, though he was able to sit in a chair till two weeks previous to his taking away. His son Nelson, and
daughter, Amelia, were with him to the last.
