John Henry "Hank" Sherwood, 89, Burlington, died at 7:02 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born March 5, 1920, on the family farm in Denmark, he was the son of John Daniel and Addie Belle Seager Sherwood. On May 1, 1947, he married Marie Wolverton in Burlington. She died December 12, 2005.
Mr. Sherwood worked at Sheaffer Pen, Burlington Northern Railroad and retired from IAAP in 1982. He then worked at Jim's Lock & Safe until full retirement in 2003. He served in the Army Scorpion Unit in France, Italy and Germany as a tank retrieval expert during World War II.
He was a member of Plumbers Union 125, and member of and longtime usher at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church. He participated in area antique gas engine shows and was a regular at the Old Threshers Reunion exhibiting his old engines. He enjoyed repairing things, and was known as "Hammer Hank." He kept the neighborhood children's bike tires inflated and mowers running. He also enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include one son, Bill Sherwood of West Burlington; two daughters, Jean Ballinger and Linda Pogemiller, both of Burlington; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eva Stansbury of Boone, Grace Andrews of Peoria, Illinois, and Amanda Moore of Donnellson; nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington.
A Christian wake service will be from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Prugh's Chapel where family will receive friends until 5 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial with military rites for Mr. Sherwood will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington with the Reverend David Steinle officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
A memorial has been established.

Marie Wolverton Sherwood, 86, of Burlington, died at 8:20 a.m. Monday, December 12, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born April 9, 1919, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William Levi and Millie Schrey Wolverton. On May 1, 1947, she married John "Hank" H. Sherwood in Burlington.
Mrs. Sherwood was a homemaker.
She was a member of First United Church of Christ and Shining Star Circle. She enjoyed bingo, sewing, crafts, crossword puzzles, roller skating, bowling, fishing and camping. She was a devoted wife and mother.
Survivors include her husband of Burlington; one son, Bill (Lana) Sherwood of West Burlington; two daughters, Jean (David) Ballinger and Linda (Dana) Pogemiller, all of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Jeff (Nicole) Sherwood, Jim (Alicia) Sherwood, Anne (Paul) Wilson, Susan (Ed) Meierotto, Steven Ballinger, SPC. Zachary Pogemiller, Joel Pogemiller; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Wilson, Caecilia Marie Wilson, Kaitlyn Marie Meierotto, Colton James Sherwood; one brother, Richard (Shirley) Wolverton of Fort Worth, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Prugh's Chapel.
The funeral for Mrs. Sherwood will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Church of Christ, with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.
