Born in Virginia, he and his wife, Margaret Wolverton McCoy were the parents of nine children. In the fall of 1837, they moved to Marion Township, Hardin County, Ohio.the log home he built still stands on the property although it has been moved to a different location. Asaph died at the home of his son David in Michigan, His body was brought by train back to Ada, Ohio where he was buried in the cemetery on the family farm.

Margaret and her first husband, Washington McCoy had one son, Issac who was born on October 1, 1816, in Virginia. After her first husband died, she married Asaph Shadley in Virginia. She and Asaph had 9 children. The first four were born in Virginia and then in 1837 the family moved to Marion Township, Hardin County, Ohio. One child was born on the way and four more after they arrived in Hardin County.
Margaret was a devote Christian and would walk to church with her oldest daughter Anne.
The last several years of her life, she was an invalid being afflicted with rheumatism. She died at the age of 58 years.
Her other children were: John Sampson Shadley, Isreal Nathan Shadley, Docia Ann Shadley, William Asaph Richard Shadley, Sarah Jane Shadley, Daniel Van Buren Shadley , David Shannon Shadley, Margaret Rebecca Shadley, Mary Elizabeth Shadley.

Asaph Shadley & Family Cabin reconstructed near original location
Hello my name is Kelly Shadley and I live in Alger, Ohio (Hardin County). Many of us are descendants of Asaph and Margaret Shadley or one of their children (John Sampson, Israel Nathan, Docia Ann, William Asaph Richard, Sarah Jane, Daniel Van Buren, David Shannon, Margaret Rebecca, or Mary Elizabeth).
Asaph Shadley moved his family to Ohio from Virginia in the early 1800’s, specifically where County Road 90 exists now or otherwise known as Shadley Road. In the early to middle 1800’s Asaph Shadley built a log house in this area. By the Shadley Family History book, it was not a log cabin. The difference is a log cabin is a rough, structure for expedient short lived use, where a log house functioned as a permanent family homestead.
Then in 1973 Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Adams bought this log house and moved it from its original location to the corner of 235 and 309 near the Red Fox Inn. In 2005 the land was sold and the cabin was auctioned off. Bryan Shadley of Everett and Evelyn Shadley bought the cabin at the auction. He, along with his brothers and sisters, some friends, and other family members, it was taken down piece by piece.
The cabin was taken to the land just west of Everett and Evelyn Shadley’s property. The cabin would be rebuilt next to the cemetery where Asaph, Margaret, and a few children are buried. It sits in front of the woods and can be seen from the road.
In July of 2006 the Shadley cabin started to become the cabin it once was. A group worked long and hard to get the foundation and most of the cabin was put up (minus the chimney/fireplace, doors, and roof). Then, over the past 3 years family members and friends have continued to come together to work on the cabin.
August 2009 the cabin was very close to being completed. By this point in time, the roof was done with the help of the local Amish. Then Mike, Bryan, and Kelly Shadley along with Tami Ellis and Kyle Blair worked hard for two full weeks putting a lot of the finishing touches on the cabin right before the Shadley Reunion. Windows were fixed and placed into the window areas, the original doors were put up, the floor was put in on the bottom level, staircase fixed and put in, and the upstairs side walls were redone due to the original wood being too old to be useable.
The only thing that is not completed is the chimney and upstairs floor. When we tore down the cabin, we did not take the fireplace/chimney because it was not the original. Over the next year or so, we will be collecting rocks to reconstruct a fireplace and chimney. At the moment, doors are put up to protect the inside. We will also be finding wood to use to create the upstairs floor.
If you are in Ohio and live near by, you should take a stroll down County Road 90 (Shadley Road). You can see the cabin and its beauty from the road. If you are family, you may also drive back the lane and park to walk to the cabin to check it out. We can even meet you there to show you the inside of the cabin!
If you do not live near Alger, Ohio but would like to make a trip to see this, I would advise you to do so! Again, you can see the original cabin that Asaph Shadley built! Even if you are not a descendant of his, this is STILL FAMILY HISTORY!! If you are a descendent of Johanne Schadla that started this all, then you should come see it.
We are putting in pictures and documents and making it into kind of a museum of Shadley history. We would love to meet any relatives and share stories. We would love to show you the cabin and all the cool pictures and things we have already there. We worked hard to bring back a little bit of our family history and we want to share it with everyone that we possibly can.
If for some reason you are unable to make it to Ohio, I am working on creating a computer disk of all the pictures, videos, etc. from the beginning to the current status of the cabin. You may order one and I will be more than glad to mail it out to you. I would say these will be available by January 2010, but you may get your name on the list!
