"Documents disagree, but Burroughs was born sometime between 1808
and 1816. The 1850 Indiana census says he was 42 (suggesting birth in
1808); the 1860 census says his age was 49 (suggesting 1811) ; hi s civil
war papers from 1861 say he was 45 (suggesting 1816) . David Guilliom,
suspects he claimed to be younger than his real age to be recruited by
the Union army.
Burroughs served in the Civil War, enlisting when he was 45 years
old. He was a cripple when he enlisted. Burroughs went to Kansas,
leaving his wife in South Bend, Indiana. He died in 1879 and was
buried in the Medicine Lodge Cemetery, Medicine Lodge, Kansas."
