Hal was the founder of Industrial Sales & Engineering Co., where he worked for 39 years, retiring in 1994. He was a Navy fighter pilot in World War II. Mr. Schornstein was a graduate of Purdue University in mechanical engineering. He was a member Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, the Junto Club of Indianapolis, Meridian Hills Country Club, the John Purdue Club, Sky Vu Flyers, American Legion Post 34 and the Indiana Camber of Commerce. He was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troops 10 and 48.

He married Marcia Penick on April 3, 1948 and they had three children together: Mark Thomas, Douglas Franklin, and Kathrine Ann.

Marcia was born in Quincy, Illinois and she lived in Indianapolis since 1948. She finished high school at Stephens College 1943-44 in Columbia, Missouri and then attended Purdue University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Marcia married Harry E. Schornstein on April 3, 1948 in Quincy, Illinois. They had 3 children together: Mark Thomas, Douglas Franklin, and Kathrine Ann. She was a member of St. Margaret's Hospital Guild and Friends of Friendless Animals, as well as several other wildlife conservation groups (the Audubon Society, etc.) She loved shelling the beaches of Sanibel, Florida. She loved nature and animals, but loved her children and grand children even more.
