Birth: Oct. 16, 1919
Death: Feb. 3, 2007
Ned Mincy Shelton was born in Manitou on Oct. 16, 1919, to Gordon and Selma Shelton (McClanahan). His parents were public school educators and taught school in Norman, Manitou, Frederick and Mangum. Ned's grandparents, Artemus and Mattie Shelton were early day settlers and farmed in Gould.
His adolescent years were spent in Norman in the home The Shelton's built at 914 Monnett St. in 1917. He graduated from Norman High School in 1938, and began his higher education at Oklahoma University. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. With the onset of World War II, Ned enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at Whidbey Island, Washington. He became an officer and served as a Lieutenant Commander until the end of WWII. After the war, he returned to OU and graduated with a Master's Degree in Petroleum Engineering. He then joined the Naval Reserves and served for an additional twenty years until he was discharged in 1962.
Ned was employed for 35 years by Pan American Oil Company, which later became Amoco Oil Corporation. He was known as a "one company man", a rare accomplishment in today's world of multiple careers.
Ned and Virginia Shelton met in Kansas City, Mo., in 1946. They were married June 7, 1947, at the First Baptist Church in Tulsa. They made their home in Tulsa until after the birth of their first son, Gordon, then moved to Wink, Texas. A career move to Midland, Texas, in 1951, produced their second son, Jim. A transfer to Fort Worth, Texas, birthed yet another son, Larry in 1954. After Ned learned of his forth company move back to Tulsa in 1955, he thought Ginny and he were finished with their family. So, as so often happens with our mortal plans, God's will was different, for He bestowed yet another son, Kent, in 1957 to Ned and Ginny.
Ned was actively involved in his son's lives. He served as a scoutmaster for Troop 52 and assisted many young men with their camping skills, merit badge achievements, and led by example what it meant to be a man of character and virtue.
He was baptized as a member of the First Baptist Church of Frederick, Oklahoma in 1932, and always served as the spiritual head of his household in a gentle, but persuasive way. He was an encourager to his family providing that the way to everlasting life was only by baptism and claiming Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. Ned was also a member of the Masons and obtained his 60th degree in 1994.
Ned and Ginny retired from professional life in 1981 and moved to Mangum, Oklahoma to farm the land his grandfather has owned since 1926. They soon made new friends and thoroughly enjoyed living a slower paced, rural lifestyle. Some of Ned's favorite times were spent with his sons and his many grandchildren. He loved it when his various grandsons and granddaughters came for extended visits so he and Ginny could love on them and show them how to appreciate county life. They always returned to their city homes with memories of "the Farm" and their beloved Papa.
Ned died at 12:15 p.m., Feb. 3, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. Fourteen years ago, on Feb. 3, his youngest grandson, Ned, was born in the same hospital, and his mother, Selma, was also born on Feb. 3 back in 1899. Another interesting coincidence is the date Sept. 25, which is shared as a birthdate by two of Ned's sons and Ned's own father. It also was the date Ned's mother-in-law, Pearl Morse, died. "The Circle of Life" describes how we all pass through life and are born and reborn into new life. The sharing of so many birth and death dates within the Shelton family helps to remind us all of this important truth.
Ned is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia. He also leaves behind his sons, Gordon, Jim, Larry and Kent, their wives, Debbye, Penni, Debbie and Suzette. His grandchildren included Laura, Jessica, Erika, Zachary, Ryan, Ned, Andy, Brian and Chad. There is also one great granddaughter, Taylor left behind.
Ned M. Shelton exemplified to all who knew him what it meant to be a Husband, a Father, an Officer and above all, a true Gentle Man.

SHELTON - Ginny, died on her favorite day of the week, Sunday, August 5, 2007. She passed from this world to the next, eager to meet her Savior and relatives, surrounded by her 4 sons and their wives. She and her twin brother, Virgil, were born December 22, 1924, in Danville, AR. They were the youngest of 10 children fathered by George and Pearlie (Noblett) Morse. She grew up on the family farm learning her life long lessons of self reliance, common sense, canning, cooking, and healthy living. She was taught that she could do anything if she just set her mind to it and persevered through any opposition. These lessons were passed on to her sons, Gordon, Jim, Larry, and Kent. Ginny moved to Kansas City after graduating from high school and learned how to be a dental hygienist. She also obtained her pilot's license and flew Piper Cub airplanes. While living in Kansas City, she met the love of her life, Ned Shelton. They were married after a brief courtship, on June 7, 1947 in Tulsa. Ginny continued to work in the dental health field until her first son, Gordon, was born in 1949. Ned was transferred to Midland, TX, where Jim was born. Another move to Fort Worth, produced another son, Larry. The growing Shelton family moved back to Tulsa in 1955. In 1957, their fourth son, Kent was born. With all the demands of a family, Ginny honed her cooking and canning skills. From her years growing up on a farm, she knew how to find local produce and was proficient at stretching a dollar to feed 6 mouths. Ned was transferred to Chicago, IL, in 1973, where Ginny met many more life long friends and even went to a culinary school, where she graduated with her Chef's Certificate. She taught bread making classes as a result of her skills learned from years of making her own food from scratch. Ned retired from Amoco Petroleum Co. in 1981 and moved back to the family farm in Mangum, OK. Their retirement years gave Ginny and Ned wonderful opportunities to travel, learn wheat farming, and watch their growing family enjoy the beauty of southwest Oklahoma. They both loved meeting and making new friends. Ginny was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband and 13 brothers and sisters. She is survived by: her 4 sons and their wives, Debbye, Debbie, Penni and Suzette; her grandchildren, Lora, Jessica, Erika, Zach, Ryan, Ned, Andrew, Brian, Chad, Gabrielle, and Ashland. Ginny's only great-grandchild is Taylor Shelton. Ginny was a member of Eastern Star, First Baptist Church of Altus, and lived her life as a follower of Christ Jesus. She will be remembered as a loving Matriarch, who was always more than willing to give her advice and guidance on many aspects of this brief life on earth. The family will greet friends 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, August 8, 2007. Funeral service for Ginny Shelton will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, August 9, 2007, at Greer Funeral Home Chapel, Mangum, with Dr. Jeff Moore and Joe Carlton officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
