General Notes: Husband - Charles Wolverton Mixter

Birth: Apr. 5, 1854
Milan
Erie County
Ohio, USA
Death: May 31, 1937
California, USA

Charles was born in Milan, Erie County, Ohio. When of age, Charles W. Mixter and his cousin, George Washington Mixter, had a wholesale business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were there during the "Centennial Exhibition" of 1876. Among the exhibits were the new high-wheeled bicycles - very interesting to the young me, who passed by the new "telephone" as a "curiosity, but of no use to anyone!" Several illnesses sent Charles back to Ohio and his father's farm. After a time, he bought an interest in a general store in Wheaton, Michigan, and went back to Milan, Ohio, to get his wife, Dana (Mandana)Schaeffer.
For a time, Charles and his wife lived in Wheaton, Michagan; and then lived in Geneva, Michigan; Elkhart, Indiana; and Clayton, Michigan. After the death of his wife, he moved back to Milan, Ohio, where he went into the milling business, using the old "mill-stone" grinders. He moved to the "Steeple Hill" in Milan in 1892, with his sister, Lovisa, making the home for him, their mother, and his three little girls.
The family moved in 1897 to Long Beach, California. For a time he had a general store at 333 East 2nd Street. Afterward he was a surveyor for oil-companies on the hills of the Newhall field; worked a gold-mine; had several apiaries in the Coachella Valley. He also had fruit and almond orchards in Banning, California. (Reference: THE MIXTER FAMILY, a letter written by his granddaughter, Dorothy Stanley, 1996)
