Carl Ekman
Carl August Gerhard Ekman, born Aug. 16, 1919, passed away peacefully on his birthday Aug. 16, 2013, at the age of 94.
Carl was the son of Otto Gerhard Ekman and Alice May Shoemaker and the eldest of 13 children. Born in Coburg, Iowa, he and his family later moved to Wisconsin.
In April of 1939, he started working for the U.S. Forest Service as a junior fire guard, eventually becoming a permanent employee. He married his wife Dorothy Irene Agnew in 1940. They lived on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, but eventually moved to McCloud, Calif. Carl and Dorothy had six children, 14 grandchildren and many, many great-grandchildren.
Carl proudly served in the U.S. Army, enlisting Sept. 29, 1944, and stationed in the Philippines and Japan. He was discharged Feb. 14, 1946. He retired years later in 1984 as a supervisory forest technician in silviculture at the McCloud Ranger District.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish. He also was passionate about his garden, planting huge vegetable gardens every year, which helped to feed his family and his many friends and neighbors. Carl was an amazing artist, creating beautiful and intricate wood carvings.
For many years, he shared his ingenuity with the community by restoring toys for kids that were distributed at Christmas by the McCloud American Legion Auxiliary. As a child, his family was too poor to provide toys for he and his siblings thus it became a passion of his to help children in need.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (who we are sure is waiting for him with a cup of coffee and her famous homemade donuts).
He is survived by his children Gordon Ekman, Bill and Sandy Ekman, Marylou and Larry Lamphere, James and Dee Ekman, Dorie and Greg Macdonald, and Tom and Lindy Ekman, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Pelican Pointe, High Desert Hospice and his special friend Cindy Smith.
A service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point, Ore. O'Hair Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
