He grew up in Ross Township attending the one room schoolhouse, Helm School. In 1923, when Galen was 12 years old, the family rented the farm for a year. His father built a "house" onto a Model T Ford and they all went to California for a year. While there Galen and some of the other family members were cast as extras in the movie "Lincoln." In 1931 Galen and two other friends lived in Idaho where he worked in the potato fields. From that point on Galen found employment in traveling all his life.

They were then taken to the eastern United States because they would always be such high quality. Galen and Dorothy retired from farming in 1973 although they continued to lice on the farm and maintained their love of the land by gardening and other outside activities. In 1990 Galen and Dorothy moved to Bedford, Iowa where they lived until Dorothy's death in 1993. After suffering stroke in 1994 Galen moved to ive with his son in Missouri. In 1996 he moved to the Mariner Health Center in Olathe, Kansas. Galen died on December 18, 1997 at the Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas almost a month after his 86th birthday.
