Cornelius Ducalion Woolverton graduated at the University of Arkansas in
1885, amongh the university's first graduates, and for some years was one
of the leaading educators of the state.
His nephew, William Erwin Halbrook, stayed with C.D. Woolverton at the
Clinton Academy around 1897 (or 1898?). In his book, "A School Man of the
Ozarks", his nephew said, "My uncle had taken the lead of good citizens in
trying to oust a corrupt element, really outlaws, who predominated in the
community and ran all the affairs of the school and the town. This
precipitated a re-action as would be expected, and the factions had been
shooting at each other, two of my uncles among them; there had been
burnouts in the town. We had to live of nights with all the window shades
down, and in a state of fear of the possibilities of sniping. It took the
town several years to outgrow the feud."
