He was a veteran of the Civil War. After first being drafted into the Confederate Army at age eighteen he deserted to serve in the Union Army in Company G of the Sixth Tennessee Calvary U.S.A. under Col. Fielding Hurst. He was captured near Bolivar, Tennessee and imprisoned. During a prisoner exchange he survived the explosion and sinking of the steamboat Sultana on the Mississippi river near Memphis. The 6th Tennessee Cavalry mustered out of service July 26, 1865.
Following the war he became a claims attorney in Adamsville,TN.

"The Wolverton House was built by Thomas Wolverton in
the late 1800's. The house is located on Highway 117 in
Adamsvllle. Tom Wolverton was a veteran oi the Civil War,
having served in the "G.A.R. 6th Tennessee Regiment" according
to the inscription on his tombstone in A damsville
Cemetery. Tom Wolverton (1844-1928) lived for a number
of years with his wife, known as Aunt Sallie Wolverton
(1843-1928) in the grand old house."
