COUPLE SWEPT AWAY BY PLATTE RIVER; HUSBAND DIES
Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska - About a dozen airboats crisscrossed a five-mile stretch of the Platte River west of Fremont Nebraska as rescuers, neighbors, and friends searched Friday for 64 year-old Dale Cady.
"It's always amazed me how the river community pitches in to help when there's a problem, especially when it's one of their own." said Dan Weddle, Dodge County Sheriff.
This time the river claimed its own.
Gale's body was found about 9 A.M. Friday, wedged against a sandbar about three miles downstream from where he was last seen Thursday night.
Cady, 64, and his wife, Kathy, 42, apparently stepped into a hole while wading in the river and were swept downstream by the strong current.
Mrs. Cady, who can't swim, managed to grab onto a tree limb and eventually crawled to safety on the riverbank. She was uninjured, rescuers said.
Cady was apparently unable to make it to shore.
Friday morning, as searchers combed the river and riverbank, others comforted Mrs. Cady.
Cady and his wife lived in a cabin at Cedar Lakes, a small community on the river north of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska which is in Sanders County.
Cady had recently retires as a truck driver, friends said. He was familiar with the river and its sometimes treacherous currents, said Terry Lorenzen, captain of Cedar Bluffs fire and rescue unit.
Lorenzen paced the riverbank Friday after Cady's body was recovered. Lorenzen said he had known Cady for many years.
"When the whistle blows like it did last night, you always figure it might be for somebody you know," Lorenzen said.
Investigators said Cady and his wife had gone for an evening river ride in their small airboat when they decided to stop and wade in what had appeared to be a shallow stretch of the river. The Cadys' were swept away by the current.
It is unclear when the accident occurred, Lorenzen said the call came in at 10 P.M. after someone apparently noticed that a boat had been parked in one place for a long time.
Searchers used airboats equipped with lights as they looked for Cady until about 3 A.M. The search resumed at daylight with about a dozen airboats. Weddle said. The search included personnel from Cedar Bluffs, Fremont, Sanders County, and Dodge County.
They found Cady's body partially submerged on a small sandbar on the south side of an island located just south of the Fremont Air Boat Club. The club is about two miles west of U.S. Highway 77 bridge.
"As high as the river is, there just aren't many sandbars out there," Weddle said. "It was quite lucky that we were able to find him at all."
The Platte is running unusually deep and swift because of recent rainfall and snow melt from Rocky Mountains.
Weddle said that conditions on the Platte River, high water, and a current of about 7 miles per hour, are reasons that even those experienced in river related accidents should be wary.
"I grew up on this river, and right now I'm a little afraid of it." Weddle said. "This much water and current moves a lot of sand around and in a hurry. One day it's a foot deep, and the next day it is a deep hole in the same spot."
"People need to be very, very careful this summer if they are out on or along this river. It's high right now, and it's going to stay that way."
