CITY POLIO CASE ONLY "SUSPICION"
City Physician, Dr. Mary McVean Edmond said today that Carl Abbott, 10, was taken to the Douglas County Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Tuesday night by his father, a. A. Abbott, 919 North Seventh Street, Nebraska City, Nebraska, but that there was only "suspicion" of polio in the case and that she had not yet received word from the hospital that the boy actually had polio.
Mr. Abbott called the hospital Wednesday night, was told that his son, while still very sick, had a somewhat lower temperature than earlier in the day.
Mr. Abbott, whose home is at 919 North 7th Street, was at a loss to know where Carl contracted the disease. He has not been swimming nor has he been out of town this summer, the father said.
Dr. MacVean reported that the Abbott family was not under quarantine, but that the family had agreed to voluntarily quarantine themselves until Carl's condition was determined definitely.
Dr. McVean also disclosed that a "slightly suspicious" case had been reported in the city, but that it was to early to ascertain whether or not the child had polio.
The Jaycee Boys' Camp will be called off if any case of polio develops in the city. Jaycee President Alvin Willis said today; The camp committee Thursday virtually had decided to abandon the idea of the camp rather than take any chance of spreading the disease.

POLIO CASES IN NEBRASKA CITY ARE "FALSE ALARMS"
CARL ABBOTT IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION WITH MENINGITIS
Ten-year-old Carl Abbott is in "critical condition" in the Douglas County Hospital with spinal meningitis, City Physician Dr. Mary MacVean-Edmonds reported today after a conversation with the hospital authorities who assured Dr. MacVean that the child did not have polio as first suspected.
The other "suspected" polio case in the city also has turned out not to be the dreaded disease, Dr. MacVean disclosed after a recent check-up on the case.
Meningitis also is a contagious disease and strikes in about the same manner as polio, Dr. MacVean said. The sulfa drugs and other new medical practices "work wonders" with battling meningitis, however and the death and crippling rate has been cut considerably in recent years.
Dr. MacVean said that meningitis although another of the "mystery" diseases in which the cause is still unknown. She said that only once in her career did she experience what was believed to be a meningitis epidemic.
Dr. MacVean said the news that Carl does not have polio should be who have been worried over polio, good news to anxious parents here, but that the youngster probably is in greater danger from meningitis that he would have been from polio.
Plans to close the swimming pool now have been abandoned, the city physician said.
