Research Notes: Husband - Daniel KOONE



Daniel David Koone's family had three sons in the Civil War. Another son,
age 14 or 15, was large for his age.  For fear that he would be drafted,
he hid in the woods when strangers came near their house.  My grandfather,
Daniel, age 12 or 13, would slip into the woods with food and using bird
calls would locate his brother, and give him food.  Grandpa hunted with
traps during those years.  One winter he didn't have any shoes.  He'd
check his traps during severe cold or snow by heating a board, grabbing it
and running as fast as he could until his feet were numb.  He threw the
board on the ground, stood on it awhile then grabbed the board and ran
again.
Daniel Koone built a house for his family about six miles northeast of
Cleveland in Van Buren County (Ark).  He split by hand all the shingles
for that house.  Late one winter, he was chopping wood and cut off about
half his foot.  Only a small strip of skin was not severed.  The doctor
sewed the foot back on with black sewing thread, the only thread my
grandmother had available.  His foot was not healed sufficiently for him
to prepare the soil for planting in the spring.  Neighbors prepared the
seedbed, my mother, about 6 years old at the time, dropped the corn by
hand, and Grandpa hobbled along and covered the seed with a hoe.  He
recovered and harvested the corn.  He made a crop every year until he was
in his eighties.
