Robert D Evans of Martindale, Texas passed away early Tuesday morning, February 18, 2014 at 64 years of age after a long battle with acute myeloid leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He was born October 28, 1949 to R D and Margaret Evans in Kingsville, Texas. He was raised in Luling, Texas and was a proud graduate of Luling High School Class of '68 where he was an active member of the school community. He earned a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Bob was an avid UT basketball fan and served as an assistant manager for the UT men's basketball team his freshman year. He was a staunch supporter of the Texas public school system and of UT's commitment to being a research university.
He was a loving father and devoted friend to many and touched the life of everyone that he met with his generous spirit and playful nature. He cherished his times with his children and grandchildren, cooking together in Martindale and sitting around the table talking for hours. Bob showed a genuine interest in other's lives and was always concerned with how he could help his friends and family. He had a passion for cooking and traveling with his wife, Sue and with his close friends on their Mother's Day weekend trips. Some of his favorite times were his adventures with Sue and their beloved lab, Anna, driving throughout the US seeking out each of the dead presidents, visiting family and finding new foods to try along the way. His trips to Zabar's in New York always promised new kitchen tools to try when he returned to his most favorite place, his house on the river.
Bob was a true entrepreneur and built a successful business as a manufacturer's representative in the lighting industry with the help of Tracy Reeves, whom he valued incredibly for her commitment to him over the years. He was greatly respected in the lighting industry and served on the board for the American Lighting Association. He was honored with the ALA Pillar of the Industry award in 2009.
Bethel Primitive Baptist Church was an important place of worship and fellowship throughout his life. His times at the church and each of the members were so special to him, and he was a beloved part of his religious community.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Evans; daughters, Stephanie Evans Chesnick of Houston, Becky Ast and husband Steven Ast of Katonah, New York, Denise Forbes of Wimberley; and son, Jeff Wingate of Key Largo, Florida. He is also survived by his grandchildren Evan Ast, Emily Ast, Robin Forbes and Amanda Forbes; sister, Carolyn Detrixhe and husband, Tom of Bastrop; and numerous nieces, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving niece, Janna Detrixhe.
Visitation will be Friday 5:00pm to 8:00pm at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart. Funeral service will be Saturday 10:30am at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, McMahan with Elder Sonny Huckaby officiating. Burial will follow at Jeffrey Cemetery in McMahan.
The family expresses thanks and gratitude to all that supported him through his health battles including the team at MD Anderson Cancer Center and the friends too numerous to list who kept him in prayer. Memorial donations can be made to Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in McMahan, Texas or to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
