Thornton was a Civil War veteran, serving in Company K of the 149th Indiana infantry from 21 Feb 1865 through 28 July 1865. He was the son of Samuel Jackson and Mary Hixon and was married to Catherine Kergin on 28 June 1859 in Clermont county, Ohio. After Kate's death in 1918, he was remarried to Mary J. Sweeting on 7 Decmeber 1920 in Vigo county, Indiana.

Obituary form the Terre Haute Tribune on October 31, 1932

Farmersburg, Ind. Oct. 31---Thornton Jackson, 95 years old, a civil war veteran, died at the home of his son in Farmersburg Monday at 3:10 a.m. He is survived by two sons, Leiws Jackson or Framersburg, and Earl Jackson of Terre Haute; by three daughters, Jennie Fulk of Oklahoma, Ida Mitchell of Cincinnati, and Rose Moore of Indianapolis and by two brothers, Samuel Jackson of Cory, and Edwin Jackson of Terre Haute. The body was taken to the Ray Wood Funeral Home in Farmersburg, from where the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock with services at the Oak Hill church, near Riley at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery.
