John Hopple was a member of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. The company was a federalized Illinois National Guard Tank Company from Maywood, Illinois. During the Battle of the Pockets on Bataan. Hopple and three other members of his battalion crawled out, with a stretcher and under enemy fire, to rescue a wounded member of the battalion. The soldiers were successful at rescuing the wounded man, but Hopple and two other of the rescuers were wounded by enemy fire. The fourth man drove the three to a field hospital, but by the time they arrived, Hopple and the other two men had died from their wounds. The man they rescued survived the war.
