WILLIAM WALTER STANLEY, born at Whitehall, Montana Feb. 24, 1903; graduated from Whitehall High School in 1921, and in 1927 received his B.S. degree in entomology at Montana State College (Bozeman), later in the year accepting a position as assistant entomologist at the University of Tennessee Experiment Station. During the winter months he worked on a master's degree which was awarded to him by Ohio State College in 1931. The deer hunting in Montana must have been good for he spent the winter there.
Early in his life Bill laid the foundation for his scientific excellence through his indefatigable enamorment of bugs, snakes, butterflies and insects of all kinds. Much to his father's consternation on such vital missions as going
for the cows he never failed to make a personal survey of any living thing pertaining to entomology- even though he was late in getting the barn-bound bovines home. But the frigid Montana weather had no cooling effect on the rigors of romance.
Sept. 1, 1932 found him back in Tennessee at Tellico Plains where he married a most delightful and charming personality, Francis Ivan Herford. They were married in The Mansion, her birthplace. Since that event The Mansion has been marked as a historical landmark. At the time of their marriage Francis was assistant editor in the University of Tennessee Agricultural Editors group. Bill and Francis are the parents of two sons, Brooke Herford, born Oct. 12, 1938, and Page Boyce, born July 24, 1940, in Knoxville. Both graduated from the University of Tennessee college of engineering. Page now is finishing his master's degree in industrial engineering. They were ROTC officers while in college. Brooke now is taking jet pilot training at the Reese Air Force base in Texas. Page plans to take similar training following the completion of his post graduate work.

Francis was the daughter of Cyril Francis and Sara (Boyce) Herford, Her father was an Englishman, who was born in Italy. Her paternal grandfather Ivan Herford was also an Englishman born in Italy. Francis was named after her father, which is why her name uses the masculine form "Francis" rather than "Frances". Her mother was born in Tennessee. Her parents Cyril Francis Herford and Sadie Boyce were married May 28, 1895 in Lincoln county, Tenn. Francis had a sister, Marion (Herford) Carson of Athens, Tenn.
