Florence H. Sliker

Local Woman Killed In Car-Truck Crash.

A service will be conducted in the Chamberlin Funeral Home tomorrow at 11 a.m. for Mrs. Florence H. Sliker, 71, of 25 Morse St. who died Monday (Aug. 30, 1976) of injuries suffered in a car-truck collision at the intersection of Route 36 and Gibson St. that afternoon.

Mrs. Sliker was pronounced dead on arrival at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, where she was rushed by ambulance after treatment at Noyes Memorial Hospital following the grinding accident.

Her husband, Claude T. Sliker, 74, driver of the car in which she was riding, was also rushed to the Rochester hospital. He was listed in guarded condition with multiple head and internal injuries and a fractured leg.

The accident brought the first traffic fatality within the village in five years. The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. and was investigated by Sgt. Marc Vernam and Officers Dennis Mahus and Roger Mustari.

Investigators said Mr. and Mrs. Sliker were heading south on Route 36 when their car was struck in the front left side by a heavy dump truck driven by Robert Sharp, 44, of Canisteo. Sharp, who escaped injury, was operating the truck which carried 17 tons of blacktop material. The vehicle is owned by Allegany Bitumens Inc. of Belmont.

Police report that Sharp was traveling north following a car when a third auto coming in the opposite direction made a left turn into Gibson St. The northbound car driver slammed on the brakes to avoid the turning vehicle and Sharp said he had to swerve to avoid hitting it. The truck then skidded into the opposite lane, striking the Sliker vehicle.

Mrs. Sliker had lived in Dansville for the past 35 years. She was employed for many years at the Blum Shoe Mfg. Co., retiring in 1968. Mrs. Sliker was a member of the Dansville Presbyterian Church, the Groveland Grange and Deborah Chapter 364, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, David and Alfred, both of Dansville; two brothers, Howard Hendershott of Scottsburg and Earl Hendershott of Avon; four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Leadley of Geneseo, Mrs. Katherine Buchanan of Geneseo, Mrs. Clara Woodcock of Groveland and Mrs. Gertrude House of Avon; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson; nieces and nephews.

The Rev. William Leety, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate at the funeral service. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Groveland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dansville Ambulance Fund.
