"William Marion Harlan was born July 19, 1926 at College
Mound, Randolph County, Missouri. After attending rural
elementary schools in Randolph County and Huntsville High
School, he entered the U.S. Marines in October 1944, serving
in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in October 1946.
Marion entered the University of Missouri at Columbia in
February 1947 and completed 2 years in the college of arts
and science . Next he enrolled in the UMC law school and
graduated from the law school in June 1951. He became a
member of the Missouri Bar Association in July 1951.
From August 1951 to October 1952 he served as a claims
adjuster for MFA Mutual Insurance Company (now Shelter
Mutual). He met and married his wife, Erma Hardy (nee
Lindsey), in 1952. They were married September 12, 1952 at
Springfield, Missouri. Then for a year he opened a law
practice i n Huntsville, Missouri, but by October 1953, he
decided to return to MFA.
He worked a few years as an adjuster and then was promoted
to Claims Supervisor. He was promoted to Regional Claims
Director in February 1975 and served in that capacity until
his retirement from Shelter Insurance Company on August 1,
1991. His outside interests include family, church, Boy
Scouts, community affairs, and genealogical research."

William Marion Harlan, 85, of Columbia passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at South
Hampton Place.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 25, at First Baptist Church in Columbia. A
visitation will, be held from 1 p.m. until service time on Monday at the church.

He was born July 19, 1926, in Randolph County, the son of James Stanley and Claudia Marie
Harlan. He was united in marriage on Sept. 12, 1952, to Erma Rose Lindsey.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Erma Rose Harlan; one son, Stanley Ray Harlan; one
grandson, Joshua Andrew Harlan; one granddaughter, Lindsey Jo Harlan; one great-grandson,
Evan Alexander Harlan — son of Joshua; and one sister, Barbara Ronimous.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Boyd Lindsey Harlan; one sister, Pauline
Moore; and three brothers, Marvin, Lloyd and Ralph Harlan.

William Marion Harlan worked for Shelter Insurance until his retirement in 1991, and he was a
lifelong deacon at First Baptist Church of Columbia. He was most recognized for his many years
of community service, keeping the streets of Columbia clean while representing the Boy Scouts of
America.
