Research Notes: Wife - Hilda Halbrook

"While attending a school exercise with a county superintendent at Denver,
Arkansas, a telephone message came that my younger daughter, Hilda, had
been shot. A 22 loaded target had been carelessly left on a neighbor's
porch near my home by some boys, when a five-year-old boy picked it up and
playing Henry Starr pointed it at my two-year-old girl who was in a porch
swing, and it fired, hitting her in the temple. The ball glanced upward
near enough to her left eye to put it out. This occurred only a short
while before my younger son was born, and my wife was greatly shocked."
William Erwin Halbrook, "A School Man of the Ozarks", p148. [This
probably occurred about 1921]
