Dorothy Jean Frederiksen, 86, of Amarillo died Thursday, July 27, 2006.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in White Deer Cemetery in White Deer. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Don Shepherd officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. Frederiksen was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Ashland, Kan., to Mary Helen Major and Onia Robert Major. She was raised in White Deer and met Ivan Frederiksen of Groom, whom she married on Jan. 29, 1939. Together they had three sons, Gary Bruce, Theodore Gene and Paul Earl.
Dorothy Jean's life was filled with music. She could play piano, organ, trumpet, guitar, accordion and even ocarina. She played basketball at White Deer High School and also played trumpet in the marching band. It was through the band that she met Ivan who was in the Groom High School band.
She taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school and was an active member of church choirs, including the Sanctuary Choir of First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo. She was a member of the Amarillo Chapter of Sweet Adelines, singing in the chorus and several quartets, one of which received honorable mention in a competition in Houston. She was a member of the Carol Lynn Singers and the Amarillo Civic Opera Chorus. Dorothy Jean served as the president of the McDowell Music Club, the Philomathic Music Club and the Women's Federated Clubs of Amarillo.
Dorothy Jean was a wonderful cook and homemaker. At one time, she owned one of the largest, if not the largest, collection of cookbooks in the Panhandle. She had several recipes which were her original creations, some of which appeared in the Presbyterian Women's Cookbook at First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and two sons, Bruce and Ted.
Survivors include a brother, Ted Major of Levelland; a sister-in-law, Frances Major of Canorado, Kan.; a son, Paul and wife Nancy of Amarillo; two granddaughters; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo, 1100 S. Harrison St., Amarillo, TX 79101.
