John "Walt" Bryant, 97, of Morning Sun died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Morning Sun Care Center. Born June 22, 1913, in Morning Sun, he was the son of George and Lulu Woolvertine Bryant. On June 27, 1937, he married Ruth Elizabeth "Betty" Highbarger in Morning Sun. She died Sept. 21, 1967. Mr. Bryant drove a truck for Nichol's Poultry in Morning Sun for many years and worked at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown until retirement. He graduated from Morning Sun High School. He was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church in Morning Sun. He was a Democrat. He coached youth baseball for many years and managed the Babe Ruth All Star Team in the Babe Ruth World Series in Glendive, Mont., in 1961. He was a Cardinals fan, attending his first game in 1934 at Sportsman Park. In 2006, at age 92, he attended two games at the new Busch Stadium. He enjoyed arguing baseball with any Cubs fan. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Poe of Wapello and Frances Wilson of Morning Sun; five sons, John Bryant of Cedar Rapids, Jim Bryant of Winfield, Mike Bryant of Granger, Ind., Tom Bryant of Morning Sun and Rich Bryant of Wapello; three sisters, Darlene Dean of Morning Sun and Shirley Haight and Maxine Hobbs, both of Mediapolis; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several step grandchildren; and step great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, his parents, four brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun where the family will receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Bryant will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Morning Sun with the Revs. Scott Smith and Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial will be Elmwood Cemetery.
